Luxuriant Images
"The images...capture a sensuous and dreamlike landscape full of people caught in misty moments. Steven J. Volpe makes his black and white selenium-toned photographs with a toy camera—a little plastic Windsor—which his creativity-promoting grandmother gave to him when he was a child. Toy cameras (such as Diana, Holga, and Lomo cameras) offer quirky defects beloved by art photographers who emulate offbeat snapshots. Volpe captures people doing their respective unselfconscious things—little boys show off their biceps, a bride floats down a sidewalk in a tourist town, and a girl is caught in a curious, mid-family gathering grimace. There is an evident ease between the photographer and subjects and it calls to mind the work of Diane Arbus and Nan Goldin..."
